My mother has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and dementia, and my grandmother suffered from both. My father, on the other hand, had all of his marbles till the day he died. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, pretty much on a daily basis, including the hardest ones - the cryptic crosswords.
According to
this article,
Interventions such as "brain training" computer games have been shown
to improve cognition over a short period, but research has not yet
demonstrated whether this can help prevent dementia.
Many other factors, including a healthy lifestyle, may help to prevent Alzheimer's and dementia, and to support those who have these conditions.
This article gives more information, including
six points for preventing Alzheimer's. Point Four is mental stimulation, which can include playing challenging strategy games such as chess, or doing crosswords or Sudoku puzzles.
Cristina Smith has created a series of ebooks called
Yoga for the Brain, which help to exercise the brain and keep it in shape. Cristina makes no clinical claims for her Sudoku puzzles, but I figure, anyting that exercises the brain and helps it to stay healthy and fit has got to be a good thing.
If you hate Sudoku puzzles, or if you are a fan of them,

I also want to mention the fact that, when we do Spiritual Response Therapy (SRT), we routinely clear people of Alzheimer's and dementia. But prevention is better than cure.
