15-Year-Old Boy Arrested for Murder

A 15-year-old boy has become the fifth person to be charged with the murder of 17-year-old Yeray Sanchez-Morales, who died after he was fatally stabbed outside MacDonald’s on the Old Kent Road in Southeast London.

I can remember being 15, but I don't remember anybody killing anybody.  What is going on in this world?

There is a lot of bad news these days, but the good news is, we can change things.  One way we can change things is through The Blogging Carnival for Nonviolence.  See also:  Terrible Things.

Parents can make a huge difference.  This terrible youth violence is PREVENTABLE.  Go here for my free Worksheet for Parents.

I'll be posting more about how parents can make a difference.

What do you think about this terrible youth violence?  And what are your biggest parenting issues?  Please post below.

How Positive Affirmations Change My Mindset on the Really Hard Mom Days

How Positive Affirmations Change My Mindset on the Really Hard Mom Days

I really like this blog post because it shows how difficult parenting can be at times, and also shows how self-empathy dan help us to connect with others, including children.

I also like the way she used the affirmations, by attaching them to the bathroom mirror and saying them out loud 3x every time she saw them. I enjoy this creativity.

For more about empathy and NVC, see NVC Resources and Books about Nonviolence.

You can purchase my ebook, Affirmations for Parents, here on Amazon.com.

25 Confidence-Boosting Affirmations for Your Child

While I like some of these affirmations, some of them use language that can actually alienate us from children (and ourselves). Nonviolent Communication (NVC) suggests that we avoid terms like “good”, “bad”, “evil” - moralistic language. This is judgmental language which disconnects us.

Statements such as “I love your creativity”, “I love spending time with you” or “I believe in you” are statements I enjoy. In these affirmations, the parent is taking responsibility for his/her thoughts and feelings.

For more about NVC, see NVC Resources and Books about Nonviolence.

Affirmations for Parents Update

I have started adding links to other people's blogs about affirmations for parents.  I find some of these resources very helpful, and I think you will, too. Go here for affirmations for parents, and for resources for using Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with children.

Being a parent is a challenging job, as I’m sure you know. It is hard to get right, and ever so easy – and dangerous - to get wrong.

As a parent, you have the opportunity to help your children grow into happy, healthy adults who contribute to others and lead satisfying lives.

Parenting in the 21st century can be complicated and confusing. As a Transformational Growth Consultant and former child, I have worked with hundreds of parents and other former children. I have seen the effects poor parenting have had, and the damage it has done, and I know that there are many parents and children who are stressed, anxious, suffering and in pain right now. I have written Affirmations for Parents to help you be the kind of parent you want to be.

Affirmations are powerful tools to help you improve your life and your relationships with your children and yourself.

This is about you taking control of your life and your relationship with your child/ren.

The messages we receive repeatedly, on a daily basis, are the ones that have the most profound effect on our thoughts and emotions, and on our lives.

We are responsible for the thoughts, the words, the pictures that inhabit our minds. Other people give us messages all the time. And if we receive these messages over and over again, repeatedly, they take up residence in our minds. They move in!  And they live there. They inhabit our minds.

The more we have positive thoughts, beliefs and attitudes rolling around in our heads, the more easily we can create positive results for ourselves and our families.

INTERnational Week for Nonviolence (2)

The INTERnational Week for Nonviolence (16th-23rd August) is a week when we are encouraging people to promote nonviolence. We are approaching faith groups, youth groups, local politicians, anyone who has an interest in or commitment to nonviolence, to take part. This is a very broad brief.

If you would like to hold an event during that week, please contact us with the details.

The INTERnational Week for Nonviolence is being spearheaded by Black Women for Positive Change, but it is open to everyone - men and women - regardless of racial or cultural background or heritage, religion, nationality, occupation, walk of life - everyone who is committed to nonviolence.

I shall be interviewing Buddhists and others about why they are committed to nonviolence. I shall be publishing the interviews on this blog and/or my other blogs, so please subscribe to this blog to keep up to date.
You can also keep in touch via:
My Facebook page:   Positive Change and Transformation
My online group:  The Key to Everything.
Follow me on Twitter:  @ZhanaHeals and @Zhana21.
The interviews will be published during the Week for Nonviolence.
The Week for Nonviolence will culminate in a summit on 23rd August. Most of the organising is being done in the States, but as I am a member of the Summit Council, I am calling it the INTERnational Week for Nonviolence.
This is one of my recent blogs:
This one contains an interview with Dr. Stephanie Myers, one of the Co-Chairs of the Summit Council, and links to more info about the Week for Nonviolence:
For more about Nonviolent Communication, see my book Success Strategies for Black People or my new ebook, Affirmations for Parents.
If you, your faith group, youth group or other organisation are planning to hold an event during the Week for Nonviolence, please share details in the comments section below.
I hope you will join us in promoting nonviolence.  Please also share this information with your networks.  Together, we can share nonviolent strategies and teach them to our young people. We can transform violent situations and make a difference in people's lives!  So join us!

Help for Frustrated, Stressed Parents

I am re-purposing this blog post.

Have you ever felt frustrated with your child because he or she won’t listen to you, or doesn’t behave in ways you want her or him to?  Or does things you wish s/he wouldn’t?   Shouting, slammed doors, sulking, etc.?   If any of this sounds familiar, you need to download Affirmations for Parents.

In these days of the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown, children and parents find themselves cooped up indoors together for seemingly endless ays, weeks, and months.  Are you finding this stressful to the point of being intolerable?  And would you like to learn some skills that can help?

As a Transformational Growth Consultant and former child, I have worked with hundreds of parents and other former children. I know that there are many parents and children who are stressed, anxious, suffering and in pain right now. I have written Affirmations for Parents to help you be the kind of parent you want to be, and have the kind of communication you want to have with your child or teen.

The key is the kind of communication we have – the way parents and children communicate. We can dramatically change the relationship by using different ways to communicate, to resolve conflicts and have happy, harmonious relationships with our kids.

Affirmations for Parents provides lots of practical help and information as well as affirmations you can start using immediately. Click here to download Affirmations for Parents now.

If you ever have trouble using affirmations, check out Why Affirmations Don't Work.

Please share this with your networks and please comment below.  What strategies do you use to improve communication with your children?

INTERnational Week for Nonviolence

I am privileged to be a member of the Summit Council of the INTERnational Week for Nonviolence, which will be held 16th-23rd August 2014.

If you are organising an event during that week, please post the details in the comments section below.

I have also posted some NVC events - not just events for that week – here.

One of my guests on my recent show about Black parents and nonviolence was saying, "You CAN'T teach young people nonviolence because they have to fight".

I was reminded of the first time I met Marshall Rosenberg, author of Nonviolent Communication.  I asked him about his work with Black gang leaders.

I talk about this in the audio below.

I am also inspired by the example of Malcolm X. He was alienated and disaffected, and he became involved in petty crime and ended up in prison. But the right support and encouragement, and given the right inspiration, he became a leader.

Listen below for more.

I am really passionate about this work. NVC is saving people's lives all over the world, and it could save your life. It could save your child's life.

The INTERnational Week for Nonviolence is not exclusively for people of African heritage. It's for everyone.

Help me celebrate the Week for Nonviolence this coming August.

I have written about Nonviolent Communication in my new ebook, Affirmations for Parents.

Are We Listening to Our Children?

Most parents think they know where their children are and what they get up to.  But that's not necessarily the case.

I was privileged to do a guest post for the Advice for Parents blog recently.  Check it out:
