A Creative Response to the Riots

We have seen rioting and looting erupt on the streets of many UK cities over the course of the past several days.

In these times of chaos and turmoil, it can be hard to find a creative response. But it is possible.

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is a method which allows us to "get inside another person's head" in order to communicate from the heart.

Locana, an NVC practitioner, recently said:

This morning on the BBC interview on TV, Ed Milliband said he couldn't 'get inside' the mind-set of those people who were rioting – and yet, of course, that's what is needed for the situation to change.

We need to 'get inside' in some way, so that we can stop approaching the rioters as 'them', and seeing everyone else as 'us'. Because this is the very polarisation that's causing the damage. (As a hooded youth from Manchester put it last night, 'we're going to show the police!')

The situations and actions of those causing the riots are part of our situation and our actions. Unless we realise this, we are living in a world of 'either-or' – where it's either your needs that are met, or mine. Alienated, exiled voices will always rebel and protest in some way. It creates a paradigm of conflict – so no wonder it produces and gives rise to conflict.

To begin the process of change, we need to transform the deep paradigm of 'either-or' within ourselves. If we can truly experience and believe that it's always 'both-and', then we can speak and act in a way which includes others, rather than alienating them. This is a place where we can hold the various different needs of different people, contradictory and diverse though those may be; so that differences are held within our common framework, and supported and honoured. Only then, I believe, do we move away from polarising thought-patterns and behaviours. Unless we do this, it's salutary to reflect that we are living in exactly the same paradigm as the rioters – our outlook is the same, even if the way we express it in action is different.

Raising Your Money Setpoint

Your money setpoint is the point above which you feel uncomfortable earning or receiving money.

Hunger in America

I have recently seen this lens, Hungry in America.

One in six Americans are at risk for hunger. There has been a dramatic rise - 50% - in the number of children at risk for hunger in America. Click here to read more.

Don't Freak Out

Affirmations are positive statements which we can use to help us achieve our goals.

The problem with affirmations is that we don't get instant results. We can't just start doing affirmations and immediately see the kinds of results we want to see. So we get discouraged.

As soon as we start moving in a positive direction, we immediately become more aware of our negative thoughts, tendencies, habits and beliefs. They come up for us BIG TIME. But don't freak out. This is just part of the process.

You can use affirmations to improve your money situation, work and career, health, or in fact, any area of your life.

You are in charge. Your future is in your hands.

We Can Turn This Around

Here in the UK, the government is bringing in measures that will lead to the loss of a milllion jobs in the private and public sectors.

I am sure similar things are happening in the U.S.A. and other countries as well. People are losing their jobs and their homes.

You may already be experiencing some of the effects of this in your business or at your workplace.

But.

We can turn this around.

The more of us who know how to bring about positive change through working with our thoughts and emotions, the more we can change our lives.

And this will mean we can influence those around us in positive ways. We can influence our families, communities and loved ones. So everyone benefits.

Chilean Miners - a Lesson in Karma

The pictures of the rescue of the Chilean miners are so heartwarming.

When those miners were buried underground, not sure if they would ever be found or if the mine would turn out to be their grave, I’m sure they did not realise they would become international celebrities. And later, while they waited to be rescued, they probably did not realise the eyes of the world were on them.

These days, when the news is filled with ever-deepening gloom, it is so wonderful to hear of something that fills us with joy. I wept as I watched men being rescued in real time, and watched the dancing, the singing, the chanting and the celebrations of their families, friends and neighbours waiting by the mine’s exit.

Most of us have never been to Chile and will never go there. But the story of the rescue of the 33 men has touched all of our hearts, all over the world. A story of survival and of hope.

It just goes to show that we are all interconnected . Each and every one of us is connected with everyone on the planet, every human being and every animal.

Everything that happens to another person touches us and affects us, even though we are usually not aware of this. When we hear a story of a disaster in a far-off corner of the world, an earthquake, a famine, a flood, it affects us and we respond.

Every action we take impacts on others, even though we don’t see the effects. The Law of Karma states that actions have consequences. This is why we have to be so careful to try to act in an ethical way.

Our connections with others are subtle and mysterious. Times like this remind us of our interconnectedness.

I've just been listening to an interview with T. Harv Eker, author of Secrets of the Millionaire Mind.

I really enjoyed listening to this interview because T. Harv's enthusiasm comes through. He is very entertaining and very honest.

The other reason I enjoyed it so much was that I have been writing about similar things for years, in Success Strategies for Black People and The Key to Everything.

In order to bring about changes in our lives, we first need to change our habits and patterns of thought, feeling and behaviour.

He talks about changing our financial blueprint, our financial programming. I couldn't agree more.

He reprogrammed himself financially and his wealth started to flow.

I've been reading The Journey by Brendan Bays.

Brendan had been working with Anthony Robbins for many years and was highly skilled and experienced at using a variety of complementary therapies. But she was in denial for many months while a huge tumour grew in her body.

Healing Breast Cancer

I was reading Louise Hay's book The Power Is Within You earlier today. She talks about healing cancer.

As you may know, Louise Hay healed herself of cancer. Here's what she says:

Many people only feel safe when they are sick. They are usually the kind that have difficulty saying the word no. The only way they can say no is by saying "I'm too sick to do it". It's a perfect excuse. I remember a woman at one of my workshops who had three cancer operations. She couldn'y say no to anybody... She was Daddy's little girl, so whatever Daddy told her to do, she did. it was impossible for her to say no.... It took four days to get her to literally shriek "No!" at the top of her lungs. I had her do it while shaking her fist. "No! No! No!". Once she got into it, she loved it.

I find that many women with breast cancer can't say no. They nourish everybody except themselves.... Two or three months of saying no to everything will begin to turn things around.

Susan Boyle's Got Talent

On the Channel 5's Wright Stuff this morning, they were talking about judging a book by its cover. Current Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle is considered unattractive and even "ugly".

Lots of people praise her for her voice and the quality of her singing, and Matthew Wright argued that this was patronising. "She's gifted", "she's an angel", etc.

People said the same thing about Elton John. When he first achieved stardom, he was 23 years old, which was considered old for a pop star. He had been around for years doing studio sessions, where he was referred to as "fat Reg". Later on, when he was established as one of the most successful rock stars ever, he was so concerned about his appearance and his weight that he developed the eating disorder bulimia.

I am so happy that someone who is not considered conventionally beautiful is being lauded for her talent. Almost all famous, successful women in the music industry are young and pretty, and trade on their looks, often dressing in skimpy outfits, the latest example of which is Lady GaGa. Why isn't talent enough for them?

Susan Boyle is a great role model for young women singers and performers.
